Science and the Coming of Moshiach

G-d created the world 5,786 years ago. But the world was never meant to remain as it was at the moment of creation — forever unchanged.
The Zohar — the foundational text of Jewish mysticism — writes that in the year 5,600 of the Jewish calendar (1840 CE), "the gates of wisdom from above and the springs of wisdom from below will open," and the world will begin its preparation for the Seventh Millennium.
"Gates of wisdom from above" refers to the revelation of Chassidus — a profound dimension of Torah wisdom that emerged in the 18th century, particularly through the teachings of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Chassidism.
"Springs of wisdom from below" refers to the extraordinary scientific discoveries and theories that emerged during that same period — breakthroughs that transformed the world in ways no previous generation had ever witnessed.
It is clear why Chassidus prepares the world for redemption: the ultimate purpose of the Messianic Era is that "the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of G-d" — meaning that G-d's presence will be felt throughout all of existence, at its fullest intensity. That is precisely what Chassidus teaches: how to perceive and experience the Divine in every aspect of life.
And this is equally why the scientific "springs of wisdom from below" emerged in the same era — to gradually accustom the world to the transformation that the Messianic Age will bring.
But what specific role does scientific progress play in preparing the world for Moshiach?
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, King Messiah, identifies three pathways:
First Pathway — Technology as a Vehicle for Spreading Divine Knowledge
Modern technology makes it possible to spread awareness of G-d to every corner of the world. Radio waves and television signals penetrate everywhere — filling even empty, uninhabited spaces with content. When those same waves carry knowledge of G-d, they literally fulfill the prophetic vision: "the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of G-d."
As the prophet Isaiah declared regarding the Messianic Era: "And all flesh shall see together that the mouth of G-d has spoken" — meaning the Divine presence itself will become visible to all.
Second Pathway — Technology as a Tool for Understanding Divine Concepts
Modern science helps us grasp spiritual concepts that might otherwise remain purely abstract.
The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) states: "Know what is above you — a seeing eye and a hearing ear." In earlier generations, this was understood as metaphor alone. But today, when we can see how a camera and microphone transmit image and sound instantly to the other side of the world — it becomes far easier to grasp what it means for G-d to be present everywhere, at all times.
Third Pathway — Science Itself Reveals the Unity of the Creator
This is the deepest of the three.
The world we perceive appears endlessly diverse: countless natural forces, different materials, objects and phenomena beyond number. Yet over the past 150 years, science has discovered that all forces of nature are expressions of just a handful of fundamental forces — and that all matter is built from a limited set of basic building blocks.
In other words: from a scientific perspective, beneath the surface of infinite variety lies a profound and unified oneness.
And this is precisely the highest knowledge that will be revealed in the Messianic Era — the absolute unity of the Creator, from which all of existence flows.
