# What Happens When Moshiach Comes?

When Moshiach comes, he rebuilds the Beis Hamikdash, gathers the Jewish people to the Land of Israel and brings a world with “neither famine nor war, neither envy nor competition” (Rambam, Hilchos Melachim 11:1, 12:5). The Lubavitcher Rebbe, King Moshiach, taught that the Redemption keeps every good thing done in exile and reveals the G-dliness hidden within it.

## What will Moshiach do?

The Rambam rules that Moshiach restores David’s kingdom, builds the Beis Hamikdash and gathers the exiles (Hilchos Melachim 11:1).

The Rambam lists Moshiach’s work in Hilchos Melachim 11:1 and 11:4:

- He restores the kingship of the House of David.
- He builds the Beis Hamikdash on its site.
- He gathers the dispersed of Israel.
- He restores all the Torah’s laws, including the offerings and the Shemitah and Yovel years.
- He perfects the entire world to serve G-d together.

The Rambam says that one who achieves this is certainly Moshiach (Hilchos Melachim 11:4). The [Rambam’s laws of Moshiach](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/rambam-laws-of-kings-moshiach/) set out each step, and the [Third Beis Hamikdash](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/the-third-temple/) stands at their center.

## What did the Rebbe teach about the era of Redemption?

The Rebbe taught that geulah (Redemption) is golah (exile) with an Alef, G-d, revealed within it.

The Hebrew words for exile and Redemption differ by one letter, the Alef, which stands for G-d, the “Master of the world.” The Rebbe explained that the Jewish people’s task is to bring the Alef into the exile and so transform it into Redemption (Sichos In English, Shabbos Parshas Acharei-Kedoshim 5751).

Nothing good is lost. Every Jew will be redeemed, and all the positive achievements of Jews, and of non-Jews too, during the exile remain and are elevated. What ends is only the concealment of the world’s inner truth. Even the highest revelations of the Redemption depend on our service now, drawing G-dliness into this world.

## Will the laws of nature change?

The Rambam rules that the world continues in its normal pattern in the days of Moshiach (Hilchos Melachim 12:1).

The Rambam writes: “Do not presume that in the Era of Mashiach any element of the natural order will be nullified … the world will continue according to its pattern.” He quotes the Sages: the only difference between now and the days of Moshiach is freedom from subjugation to the kingdoms (Berachos 34b). Isaiah’s “the wolf shall dwell with the lamb” is a parable for nations that will live in peace with Israel (Hilchos Melachim 12:1).

The Rebbe explained, from the Rambam’s words, that there will be two periods. The first keeps the natural order. The second brings a miraculous order of existence (Sichos In English, Shabbos Parshas Acharei-Kedoshim 5751). The greatest miracle of that period is the [resurrection of the dead](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/resurrection-of-the-dead/).

## Will there be world peace when Moshiach comes?

Isaiah foretells that nations “shall beat their swords into plowshares” and learn war no more (Isaiah 2:4).

The Rambam rules: “In that era there will be neither famine nor war, neither envy nor competition, for good things will flow in abundance” (Hilchos Melachim 12:5). With no shortage, there is no reason to fight. The Rebbe called the disarmament agreements of his day “a tangible foretaste” of Isaiah’s prophecy, and taught that the nations’ move toward peace comes from the world’s growing desire for the Redemption (Sichos In English, Swords Into Plowshares).

The Rebbe also explained that the revelation of G-dliness will make every other form of authority unnecessary. The nations will willingly accept the authority of the One G-d, while the Jewish people remain distinct, for “G-d, the Torah and the Jewish people are one” (Likkutei Sichos vol. 23, p. 172, as cited in Geulah Weekly 5779/763 Devarim). How the nations take part is explained under [what happens to non-Jews when Moshiach comes](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/moshiach-and-non-jews/), and how daily life changes is explored in [A World Transformed](https://moshiach.life/a-world-transformed/).

## What will people do in the days of Moshiach?

The Rambam writes that the occupation of the entire world will be solely to know G-d (Hilchos Melachim 12:5).

The Rambam ends with the verse: “The earth shall be full of the knowledge of G-d, as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9). The Rebbe explained the image: in the ocean, one does not notice the separate creatures, only the sea. So too, the world will still exist, but its limits will not be felt, because it will be filled with G-dliness (Sichos In English, Confronting Our Material World).

The Sages did not long for that era to rule the world or to eat and drink, but to be free for Torah and its wisdom (Hilchos Melachim 12:4). Geulah Weekly explains, from Chassidus, that mitzvos will then come as naturally as breathing, without struggle (Geulah Weekly 5778/700 Behar-Bechukotai, Insights; Torah Or Shemos 53c). The Rebbe added that a foretaste of this is possible now, as we stand at the threshold of the Redemption (Sichos In English, The Fulfillment of Our Human Potential).

## Will the dead come back to life?

The Rambam counts the resurrection of the dead as the last of the Thirteen Principles of Faith.

Daniel foretells: “Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake” (Daniel 12:2). Isaiah says: “Your dead shall live … awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust” (Isaiah 26:19).

The Rebbe connected this verse to the declaration of [Yechi](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/yechi-adoneinu-meaning/). In the sicha of Beis Nissan 5748, he explained that the people’s declaration “Yechi HaMelech” adds life to the leader of the generation, and that the time has come for “Arise and sing, those who dwell in the dust” (Sefer HaSichos 5748, vol. 1, pp. 350–354, as summarized in Yechi HaMelech, N’Shei Chabad). Saying Yechi brings closer techiyas hameisim.

## Where will the Redemption first be revealed?

The Rebbe taught that the first revelation of the Third Beis Hamikdash will be in 770.

On 28 Sivan 5751, fifty years after his own arrival in America, the Rebbe said that the first revelation of “the Sanctuary of the L-rd established by Your hands” will be in 770, the building from which Chassidus spread to the whole world. It will include the roof on which Moshiach stands and announces, “Humble ones, the time for your redemption has come” (Sichos In English, The 28th of Sivan 5751).

The Talmud teaches that the synagogues and study halls of the exile will be established in the Land of Israel (Megillah 29a), and Geulah Weekly notes that “Beis Moshiach,” house of Moshiach, has the numerical value of 770 (Geulah Weekly 5776/594 Tzav, Insights).
