# How Can We Bring Moshiach?

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, King Moshiach, told every Jew on 28 Nissan 5751 (1991): “Now, do everything you can to bring Moshiach, here and now, immediately.” He then explained how. Study more Torah, above all the teachings about Moshiach and the Redemption, do mitzvos in a beautiful way, and give more tzedakah.

## What did the Rebbe say on 28 Nissan 5751?

On the eve of 28 Nissan 5751 the Rebbe handed the task of bringing Moshiach to every Jew.

The talk began like a regular sicha. Then the Rebbe turned to the Chassidim at 770 and spoke to them directly, in the second person. Geulah Weekly printed his words this way:

> “All that I can possibly do is to give the matter over to you. Now, do everything you can to bring Moshiach, here and now, immediately.… I have done whatever I can; from now on, you must do whatever you can.”

The Rebbe asked for ten Jews “stubborn enough” to secure G-d’s consent to the Redemption right away. He also said that if people cried out “*Ad mosai?*” (“Until when?”) with sincere intent, Moshiach would surely have come already. Then, as a further step of his own, he gave each person money to pass on to tzedakah, “for tzedakah is great since it brings the Redemption near.” The same practice of a dollar for tzedakah stood at the heart of [the Rebbe’s Sunday dollars](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/the-rebbes-dollars/).

## What practical steps did the Rebbe give?

The Rebbe asked for more Torah study, more mitzvos done beautifully, and more tzedakah (Shabbos Shemini 5751).

On the Shabbos after 28 Nissan, and again on Shabbos Tazria-Metzora 5751, the Rebbe explained what “do everything you can” means. Sichos In English summarised it in the essay “Bringing Mashiach Now”:

- Cry out to G-d with real feeling: “How much longer will we be in exile?”
- Increase Torah study, both the revealed Torah and Chassidus, the inner dimension of the Torah.
- Study the subject of Moshiach and the Redemption in particular, preferably in groups of ten.
- Do mitzvos *behiddur*, carefully and beautifully, and give more tzedakah.
- Bring the same message to every Jew, since the task belongs to each one.

The Rebbe also gave a reason. Moshiach will be both a king and a teacher. A king relates to his people through commands, so we prepare by keeping the mitzvos. A teacher forms an inner bond, so we prepare by learning Torah. The [Rebbe’s ten mitzvah campaigns](https://moshiach.life/10-mivtzoim/) put this into every Jew’s hands: tefillin, Shabbos candles, mezuzah, Torah study, tzedakah, a home full of Jewish books, kashrus, family purity, Jewish education and love for every Jew.

## Why does learning about Moshiach bring him?

The Rebbe taught that studying about Moshiach and the Redemption in itself hastens Moshiach’s coming.

Sichos In English recorded this in “On the Threshold of the Redemption” (5751). The study has a second purpose as well. Men, women and children should begin to live with these ideas, understand them, feel them, and let them shape daily conduct. In the Rebbe’s words, as adapted in “Open Your Eyes and See,” this study “will open the eyes of our mind.”

The Rebbe named the sources. Learn about Moshiach as he is explained in the maamarim and the Likkutei Sichos of the Nasi of the generation. The classic starting point is [the Rambam’s laws of Moshiach](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/rambam-laws-of-kings-moshiach/) in Hilchos Melachim chapters 11 and 12. The Rebbe also recalled the Baal Shem Tov’s vision. When he asked Moshiach “When are you coming?” the answer was: “When your wellsprings spread outward.”

## Can one good deed really bring Moshiach?

The Rambam rules that one deed by one person can tip the whole world to merit (Hilchos Teshuvah 3:4).

The Rebbe built on this ruling in 5751. He taught that every private act of redemption in a person’s life hastens the Redemption of the whole world. Geulah Weekly put it simply in its Point of Light column (5779, Devarim): one small mitzvah, even by a young child, can be the one that tips the scale.

That is why the Rebbe’s request was so modest. When CNN asked for his [message to the world](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/the-rebbes-message-to-the-world/) on 20 October 1991, the Rebbe said that Moshiach is ready to come now, and our part is “to do something additional in the realm of goodness and kindness.”

## What do the Gemara and the Rambam say brings the Redemption?

The Gemara says the Redemption depends on teshuvah (Sanhedrin 97b), and tzedakah brings it near (Bava Basra 10a).

These classic sources stand behind the Rebbe’s directives:

- **Teshuvah:** “All the appointed times have passed; the matter depends only on teshuvah” (Sanhedrin 97b). The Rambam rules that “Israel will be redeemed only through teshuvah” (Hilchos Teshuvah 7:5).
- **Tzedakah:** “Great is tzedakah, for it brings the Redemption near” (Bava Basra 10a). Isaiah says: “Zion will be redeemed through judgment, and those who return to her through tzedakah” (Isaiah 1:27).
- **Love for every Jew:** The exile came because of baseless hatred (Yoma 9b). So love for one’s fellow Jew removes its cause.
- **Action:** “Action is what matters” (Avos 1:17). A sincere wish must show itself in deeds.

The Rebbe added that teshuvah has already been done. In the words of the Previous Rebbe, the Jewish people have even “polished the buttons.”

## What is left to do now?

The Rebbe taught that our task is to receive Moshiach in practice (Shabbos Chayei Sarah 5752).

At the opening of the International Conference of Shluchim in 5752, the Rebbe said that every task of the exile is complete. “In principle we are prepared to receive Moshiach, and the shlichus of our generation centers on preparing us to receive Moshiach in practice.” Every shliach, he said, must explain to everyone in his city that Moshiach’s coming is close, and that each person needs to study about Moshiach and the Redemption.

The Rebbe described this with a picture. The Redemption is a feast. The table is set, the food is served, and we are sitting at the table together with Moshiach. “All we need to do is open our eyes.” This is the work of [accepting Moshiach](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/welcoming-moshiach/), which means accepting [the Rebbe as Moshiach](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/the-rebbe-as-moshiach/), and learning to [live with Moshiach](https://moshiach.life/learn-about-moshiach/living-with-moshiach/) every day.
